Sinatra began his musical career in the early ‘40s, crooning alongside popular swing ear artists such as Tommy Dorsey. Sinatra went solo in the late ‘40s, quickly becoming the idol of “bobby soxers” across the nation.
In 1954, Sinatra’s career elevated with an Academy Award win for best supporting actor in the film, “From Here to Eternity”. That same year, he signed a lucrative recording contract with Capitol Records. The deal generated some of his most memorable material, including “Come Fly with Me” & “In the Wee Small Hours”.
Due to artistic differences, Sinatra left Capitol Records in 1958 to form his own record label, Reprise Records. Soon after, Sinatra would become synonymous with “The Rat Pack”, a group comprised of Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Joey Bishop & Peter Lawford. This group of notable entertainers would make several films together, as well as influence a great deal of popular culture & politics in the 1960s.
Sinatra announced in 1971 that he would retire, though he would come out of retirement several times over the next two decade for concerts, television appearances and other projects.
After suffering his second heart attack in 1998, Sinatra passed at the age of 82. His wife Barbara & daughter Nancy were at his side. The next night, the lights on the Las Vegas Strip were dimmed in his honor.
