Music History for March 10 - Gloria Gaynor
On this day in 1979, Gloria Gaynor had the #1 single in the country with the disco anthem "I Will Survive."
One of the most famous disco songs of all time, "I Will Survive" has been recorded in 20 different languages over the years, with the French football team taking "I Will Survive" as its anthem for the 1998 World Cup.
"I Will Survive" was written for Gloria Gaynor after she suffered a back injury and recorded the song while still in her back brace. Gloria says the song was not a reflection of her own personal life as she was happily married at the time.
Despite being ranked #9 on the late George Carlins 10 Most Embarrassing Songs of All Time, "I Will Survive" won a Grammy for Best Disco Recording in 1980 the only year the category existed. It beat out fellow nominees: "Boogie Wonderland," "Bad Girls," "Dont Stop Till You Get Enough" and "Do Ya Think Im Sexy."
Today's Question: This song, which was #1 in the country on this day in 1979, went on to win the one and only Grammy for Best Disco Recording the following year. Whats the song? |
