John Mayer's Back, and Headed Back Out on Tour
7:37PM Tuesday
March 26, 2013

John Mayer's going back out on tour.  During a Google-plus hangout sponsored by Billboard Thursday night,  Mayer told fans his voice has fully recovered from the throat granuloma that sidelined him and he's ready to launch his first major concert tour in three years.

Mayer will hit 40 cities in four different countries during a tour in support of his 2012 album Born and Raised. Last year, Mayer was forced to cancel an entire tour in support of the album due to his vocal issues.

The tour officially kicks off July 6 at Milwaukee's SummerFest, but Mayer will perform two warm-up shows: April 25 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and April 26 at the New Orleans' Jazz Fest.   The tour continues into October.  American Idol winner Phillip Phillips will be the opening act for most of the dates.

Mayer, who graces the new issue of Billboard, took questions from fans and from Don Was, the producer on Born and Raised. Mayer expressed gratitude to his fans for being so patient, and for being able once again, to sing -- or even speak, for that matter. "It's really strange the way I went silent...If you know something is hanging in the balance so much, you sort of protect yourself from it by becoming very zen."

While Mayer joked about getting his voice back -- "I'm going to like go around and sing too much now," he quipped, before singing, "I'll have a tall black coffee, please..." -- the musician who has made headlines by at times shooting off his mouth seemed to admit being forced to be quiet humbled him.

"Look at me, I'm like Clark Kent now," he said, expressing how nervous he was before the first song he performed during the event. "I'm having all these feelings and stuff. I have all these feelings of doubt now...I'm much more fun to hang out with," he laughed.
